A suit shows status and importance. It conveys authority and confidence. Because of these qualities the suit has become what it is today and has been for more than a century.
The suit is the most important piece in a man’s wardrobe. Most people only wear suits to special event’s like weddings, a lot of people wear them to work if they work a white collar job. But only because they have to.
But a suit can be so much more. A well dressed man in his custom designer suit will turn heads wherever he goes.
Suits For Men
There is more than just one kind of suit. In fact, many people get confused by the sheer variety that is available. Suits for men can be a normal suit, a tuxedo or one of the more exotic variations like a zoot suit for example.
Now please don’t go out and buy a zoot suit. They were in style for a short amount of time for a small group of people only (They showed off by wasting garment in a time when there was a shortage). It just looks stupid. Stick to Italian, English or American styles.
There is a saying that every man should at least own one suit. But in my opinion this is not enough. A respectable man should have more than just one suit in my opinion. Different occasions require different attire.
In my humble opinion, the best looking cut is the Italian cut, followed by the English cut, the American cut making last place. The better a suit fits your individual body, the sharper it will look. The Italian cut is perfect for that, the little bit more traditional English approach looks very good too.
If you can afford it, getting a suit made at Savile Row will definitely be a once in a lifetime experience if you are not used to it. I bet you never believed you are able to look that good.
Sadly, for most people places like Savile Row are too expensive. Especially if you wear suits to work, you will have to replace them from time to time even if they are good quality suits and you take proper care of them. I hope this website will help you to make the right choices if you don’t have the privilege of having a legendary tailor taking care of you. There more you know about suits, the better choices you will be able to make when building your own wardrobe.
If you are just starting your wardrobe, I recommend that you start with a suit that can be used for many different occasions. A single breasted 2 button suit in either black, charcoal or navy is a good choice. If you can afford it, go with a three piece suit as you can always leave the vest at home if you don’t need it.
For your first suit, feel free to get a relatively cheap one from a shop. Make sure to take it to a tailor after to have it adjusted to your body. That way you can get a good looking suit without spending too much money and you will be able to get a feel for suits and over time your preferences in the details of a suit will crystallize.
